I am a step mom (or soon to be) of a wonderful 2 and a half year old little girl. My boyfriend and I have been together now for a year and a half. My boyfriend and his ex wife separated when the baby was only a few months old, (no I was not the reason) at that time the ex wife took advantage of the fact that he felt guilt for the marriage failing and that he didn’t know that he could’ve stopped her and she moved out of state back to her hometown, half way across the country. This will be a second marriage for both of us, we’ve known each other since we were kids… at any rate, his ex wife kept their daughter in her homestate and wouldn’t allow visitation to him or his family unless they flew out to see her, which he did several times. When he and I first started dating I didn’t know the specifics of their divorce or their previous agreements so I kept my mouth shut and stayed out of it. He flew out there every 6 weeks to spend anywhere from 5-7 days with her, which ended up being only two days at a time. His ex would let him keep their dauhter for more than two days and then would make him bring her back to her and then he could keep her for another two days before he left… which to me is BS since your making him go all that way and he isnt getting to spend the quality time with her that he was looking to or that she told him he could, but again I kept my mouth shut.
Now over the past year I have given him some advice. I got him to speak up to her and request that she or he be allowed to bring their daughter back here for visitation for him and his family, mind you the family and her (the ex) don’t get along at all, so his parents didn’t see their only grandchild for almost a year, which really bothers me, coming from a tight knit family. I told him I thought he should seek out custody arrangements with an attorney to have the courts appoint visitation so that he is guaranteed to get his time with her, which he has done, we are still waiting on the courts though. Meanwhile, since he has pursued an attorney the ex wife is allowing their daughter to come and stay with us for a few weeks every few months, which is great!
My dilema is that his ex wife doesn’t see me as anything but just a girlfriend. Yes if you want to be technical I am… BUT at the same time, I am going to be marrying her ex and be their daughters step mom, so I will be a major part of their daughters life. I know I don’t have the right to make life decisions on their daughters behalf, But I am the one who she spends a lot of time (which I am grateful for) with if he gets stuck working when she is here, he works shifts and he cant always get the time off he requests (since he is low man at his job and my job is very flexible with time off I take as much time as we need for her). How do I get his ex-wife to start including me in travel plans and such? Or even recognizing that I am here to stay and I am not going anywhere so she has to deal with me as well! When their daughter is here, we follow ALL of the same rules her mother has for her at her house, bed times, nap times, snack times, dinner times etc., even down to the time outs if she misbehaves (as much as we hate to) we want this transition from our house to hers to be as easy as possible and want her to know that different houses doesn’t mean there are different rules! I also want her to know about the things I try to do or have done with her when she is here, so that she doesn’t feel like an outsider. Is there I way that I can try to develop some type of relationship with my future husbands ex, that is healthy and open as opposed to it being a resentful and painstaking relationship?
Sorry this is a little long winded, I am trying to give you all a background on the relationship as it is now… feel free to ask questions

Lovin_Life… I do not think you are too young at all, in fact I think it is great that you responded because it opens my eyes to the other side, the kid side and I love that! As adults we sometimes lose sight of how the child feels and that isnt right. We need to include them every step of the way, which is what I try to do with her when she is here, even though she is so young, I think when she gets older she will appreciate that more!

I applied for a personal driver job on craigslist and I gave them my info. Is there a possibility of a scam?

They replied saying I need to drive around the guy’s wife to hospitals for evaluation. They provide me with a car and they pay $800 for 10 hours a week without paying for my gas. This sounds like too much pay and I’m just wondering what they can do with my information if this does end up being too good to be true. Anyone else experience the same time of situation?

This is what they said.

This driver open is for a personal driver, someone who will be committed and ready to work with good manners and attitude. You will be driving my wife who has gotten an Evaluation Offer to run in many hospitals in some many parts of the United States which includes your State and your City. This scheme is for her to evaluate all hospitals for the time frame she can do them and am only looking for a driver who will be able to take care of the driving duty in good competency.

I suppose you know what an Evaluation is? Sometimes you evaluate companies without a notice of evaluation. This might include walking in as a patient and then taking records of how you are been attended to and how others feel about the Hospital. You have a privilege to work with her after getting the good credibility about you and further more will be discussed. This job is with a good flexible time and you can decide when you can have time, as the evaluation has no timely frame of running as you know that hospitals are open 24hrs.

You will be working for 10hrs a week, 3 times a week. The first day you will be picking her from the airport will make you work for 2Hrs and the other 2 days left you will work for 4Hrs each, (2-4-4.=10hrs) and this makes you earn a weekly pay of $800. She has a flexible time for the evaluation scheme, which means no matter what time you will have, you can have this job as a good part time job and opportunity to do some other things. An arrangement will be made by an agent who will get a car for us to use and an apartment where my wife will stay in when she comes in. The car should be expected to be brought to you a day prior to when my wife arrives the States after i have confirmed you for this driver open.

Hi, I’ve been looking on craigslist for a part time second job to help make ends meet. I found an ad for this guy looking for a personal chauffeur to drive his wife around, and for some reason, I kind of sense that this might be some bullsh*t. I mean, I don’t see a way for him to actually get my money (which is the main goal of ALL scams) but still, this just seems odd, what do you think? Here’s the email he sent me:

“Hello,

I am looking for a personal assistant.

Interviewing for a teaching job and Pregnant- when to say something?

I was laid off in late July after working at a small college for the past two years. Luckily I was called yesterday for an interview for a full-time teaching position at another area institution. This is my dream job. BUT I am 3 months pregnant with my second child(due in February) which is just about the middle of the academic semester. I have known many higher education professionals who have run into similar maternity leave situations(whereby they are due mid-semester) and am more than willing to be flexible and creative in my maternity leave arrangements. Should I tell them during my interview or should I wait until I receive an offer for the position then let them know?
I want to be honest with them- but I don’t want to have it weaken my potential for the position. What would you do?

How to NOT piss your guests, attendants and families off before and during your wedding?

I’ve been to a few weddings that have done several things in bad taste, etiquette wise. And I want to make sure that when I get married people aren’t whispering to each other at my reception how we did something rude. I realize that it’s impossible to make *everybody* happy, and that isn’t my goal, but overall I want to make sure that I am a considerate bride-to-be and practice good etiquette. I believe that etiquette doesn’t necessarily mean tradition or followed customs, but rather the observance of kind consideration of others.

Some examples:
Last month we attended a wedding of a close family member that was a 3 hour drive away… and the ceremony didn’t start until 7:00pm on a Sunday night. The cake-cutting didn’t happen until midnight. Neither one of us could afford to take off work that following Monday. I noticed lots of people complaining about the highly inconvenient location and timing. Therefore, I am going to make sure that I pick a location that is within a 30 minute drive of where we and the bulk of our family lives. Also, if I get married on a Sunday, the reception will end before anyone’s bedtime.
*** Note: I’m not saying destination weddings are rude. But I don’t think the above qualified for a destination wedding.

I recently posted a question about bachelorette party etiquette. I got invited to a BP, and was practically demanded to contribute a $100 “fee.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, I got a collection letter from the host saying “The fee is now due. Please make arrangements to… blah blah blah.” DEFINITELY won’t be doing that.

Including registry info on your invitations… Rude.
Begging someone to throw a shower for you, or throwing your own shower… Rude.
Inviting people to a shower without inviting them to a wedding… Very rude.

So what are some etiquette rules/guidelines that you intend to follow when planning your wedding? As a guest to a wedding, what was the rudest thing you experienced? And what etiquette “rules” do you consider not to be necessary, or are flexible?

I’m sorry… I guess I’ve just experienced a lot of rude people today, and I’m sort of on a rampage…

I know I’m going to get at least a few “It’s your wedding, it should be what you want” responses. I know this – and I intend to do everything I want at my wedding, and every other bride should too. But in this topic I am specifically addressing adherence [[or lack thereof]] to normal social politeness.

P.S.: I also realize that being a family member, attendant or guest to a wedding can be more or less of a financial burden. Therefore, I do not plan on ever asking for money. [[aka: if someone wants to contribute, that's there prerogative and is very much appreciated... but I'm not ever going to ask, "Will you pay for ___?"]]. If we get financial help because someone OFFERED, I will go out of my way to return the favor in other ways. Same goes for the bridal party… buying dresses and throwing parties is NOT cheap. I will make sure to give back more than a thank you note – I will go far out of my way to help them in the near future.
Bride_to_be: Yes! I definitely want to make sure to acknowledge and thank every. single. guest. That’s the only polite thing to do.

Scam? Seems a bit fishy?

Found this on Craigslist. I had emailed him saying I was interested, but only gave him my name and phone number. This was the response. Common sense tells me a couple things:

1) The words Check Processing are in the duties list.
2) The address given is a condo for sale.
3) This is for a “lawyer” in CA, but I found the advertisement in FL. He talks of “meeting up”…how would that happen….are you going to fly down here for a person you are only paying $500 a week?
4) When you look up the name given (Law offices of NAME), there is nothing that comes up that matches.

SO…..am I right? I haven’t responded. Just seems odd. Here’s the email…….
