I am in college and i have summer classes to take. I don’t need the money. I have other places to go and homework to do. I also play volleyball. When i told him i couldn’t work for the few hours he wanted me to yesterday because of volleyball he got pissed. its a part time job. How do i tell him that i need more flexible hours? that i put school before work? he’s not very understanding and hes quite intimidating.
i love this job. it’s fun and i love working with the people i do. I jst dont have the time to do it as much as he wants me to right now. i’ll have that kind of time in about a month, after my course is over.

Just ask him for a few minutes of his time. Tell him that you realize that he was upset that you couldn’t work those hours. Then tell him that you enjoy your job, but that it conflicts with your priorities. Finally, tell him that you would understand if he had to let you go to find someone more flexible.

Sounds like you need a new job.

You have to understand, people that are working full time and especially bosses do not understand people like you that put other thing before work. It’s simply not a concept that they can understand.

If he refuses to let you work less hours, it is time for you to leave. This is AMERICA, an no one should be allowed to intimidate you to work like some pinko commie would in the Soviet Union.

I don’t understand the dilemma. If you don’t need the money and the job is not fun, quit. Why put up with the stress when you don’t have to? Time is short in college. Make the most of what you have.

It’s understandable that you put a high level of importance on your education, but in the instance that you describe, you put volleyball ahead of work. Most of us do need money, and work provides a paycheck. Since you “don’t need the money” – unemployment might be a happier option for you.
